Immigration Control and “Shithole” Countries

Anyone that has a problem with President Trump calling some countries “Shitholes’ should read this brilliant article:

This article has many excellent points but this is my favorite:

“Let’s state the obvious. Some countries are shitholes. To claim that this is racist is racist. They are not shitholes because of the color of the populace but because of bad ideas, corrupt governance, false religion, and broken culture. Further, most of the problems in these countries are generated at the top. Plenty of rank-and-file immigrants from such ruined venues ultimately make good Americans—witness those who came from 1840s potato-famine Ireland, a shithole if ever there was one! It takes caution and skill to separate the good from the bad.”

I like the authors reasoning as to why a country might be called a “Shithole” but I would add that three points that relate specifically to the desirability of immigrants coming from any country would be the country’s education system, values (which might be covered in the “bad ideas” comment above) and most definitely their healthcare system.

  1.  Education:  Many of these countries that were supposedly referred to have substandard education systems that guarantee that the majority of the immigrants from those countries will be unable to do all but the most basic labor jobs.  While we do need such laborers, we can be selective in what countries they come from.
  2. Values:  It is not too much to demand that immigrants coming into our country share the basic values that have made America the country it is today.  I’m not talking about partisan viewpoints but instead basic values that all Americans share including equality of genders, racial equality, religious equality, freedom of speech, etc.  If an immigrant finds it acceptable to treat women as less equal than men or if they thinks it’s acceptable to mutilate the daughters genitals in the name of religion, then I don’t want them here.  If they think it’s Gods will that they do violence against people that don’t believe the way they believe, then I don’t want them here.  I think most Americans, regardless of political beliefs, agree with these points.
  3. Healthcare:  It is not unreasonable to expect that someone coming into our country not bring diseases that we’ve spent the last century eradicating.  There are many immigrants coming into our country that come from countries that do not vaccinate like we do and who carry diseases and parasites that are now being spread in our country.  Some haven’t been seen in our country in decades.  Others have never been in our country and we have little if any defense should a pandemic occur.  It is not too much to ask that immigrants coming into our country not bring healthcare risks with them.

There was a time in our country’s history when our general level of education and healthcare were not much different from most of the rest of the world.  Countries like Ireland, Germany, Italy, China, and others had large numbers of people looking for work and freedom and we welcomed them as we grew our country.  And as we grew, our immigration needs changed.  Those who use our Irish immigration of almost two hundred years ago as reason why we should welcome Haitians and Somalis today are ignoring history.

My advice to anyone who doesn’t think there are “Shit hole countries” is that they really ought to travel more.  I got the majority of my travels courtesy of the US military and I can think of a few countries that fit the bill quite well.  We should not let political correctness blind us from the truth.  To do so will create even greater problems in the future.  Most countries recognize this and have immigration controls for that reason.  Over the past several decades, many socialist countries in Europe have entered in a cultural suicide pact.  Thank God we have a president crude enough to tell the blunt truth and to take actions to ensure the USA doesn’t join them.
